How Much Is Your Dog Costing You?

If you own a pooch, you will already know that they can be very expensive to keep and look after. But are you aware of how much your dog is actually costing you? Here’s a rundown of some of the major costs and what you can do to keep them as low as possible.

Spaying Or Neutering – $200

One of the initial costs that many pet owners face is getting the animal spayed or neutered. This is really important as it can calm down most male dogs and also prevents female bitches from becoming pregnant. If your dog ends up pregnant then you will have to face a lot bigger vet bills and you will also have to care for a litter of puppies further down the line. And that is certainly something that you don’t want to be faced with! Don’t worry if this initial amount to get your dog spayed or neutered seems excessively high – there are things you can do to help make this cost easier to manage. First of all, you might want to find out how to get rid of debt to ease your current financial situation. As well as that, it’s worth seeing if there are any pe charities in your local area who can help with the cost of vet bills.

Dog Training – $100

If you have a puppy or a very young dog then you will need to take it to a few training courses so that it can socialize with other dogs and learns good behavior. This isn’t particularly cheap, though, and it could easily set you back a hundred dollars or so. Can’t really afford that? Don’t worry – you can have a go at training your pup yourself. It might not be as hard as you would have thought! You should be able to train your dog to do simple tricks in the garden. There are quite a few good YouTube videos you’ll be able to use to help you do this. It’s also a good idea to take your pup to the local dog park as well so that it can meet other dogs and get used to being around them. If a dog isn’t socialized enough as a puppy, then they could grow up to become quite aggressive around other dogs.

Dog Food – $120

The annual cost of dog food averages a whopping $120 but, thankfully, there are a few different ways you can try to bring this down. First of all, don’t feel obliged to buy all of the best dog food brands out there. Instead, you should buy non-branded food as this will work out a lot cheaper. Want to try and lower the cost even further? One option is to make your own food. There are a few websites where you will find some great recipes that I’m sure your dog will really enjoy. Just make sure that you find a recipe that includes all of the important nutrients that your dog will need in order to lead a happy and healthy life. You should also be aware of any food intolerances that your dog has just in case you need to omit any dangerous ingredients from your dog’s diet.

Pet Insurance – $250

Another annual expense that you shouldn’t try and go without is pet insurance. Sure, there are some very expensive premiums out there but you should be able to find something a lot more reasonably priced if you do your research when looking for some pet cover. But mark my words, you will be a lot better off paying this insurance and being able to use the insurance to cover any future vet bills rather than having to foot the bills yourself. Unexpected vet bills and medication costs can sure be very expensive!

Dog License – $15

You also need to make sure that you get your dog a license. This is a legal obligation sure, but it’s still a very responsible thing that every dog owner should do. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, it makes it easier to find your hound if it ever goes missing. The authorities will be able to trace the dog’s identification chip and license back to you. Not only that, though, but getting a license is a lot cheaper than being found without one! It costs $15 for a license, but if you are caught lacking then you will be fined up to $250!

Treats And Toys – $50

You might be amazed at how much some dog toys out there will set you back. You might be even more surprised to find out that there are a lot of dog owners out there who are very willing to treat their prized pooches to such expensive treats and toys. If you are one of those owners, then your average spend on dog treats and toys could be as high as $50 per year. No doubt there are some owners out there who might end up spending a lot more than that! Thankfully, though, there are plenty of cheaper toys out there that you can spoil your dogs with. You might even want to try and make some yourself!

Grooming – $200

You will also need to remember that grooming your dog can be a considerable expense. This will depend on the type of dog that you have, of course. If your dog has long hair then you should expect to pay quite a bit more than someone who has a short-haired pup. That’s just because your dog will need a lot more haircuts and styling. No matter what type of dog you have, you shouldn’t completely ditch any grooming just to save some cash, though. Grooming is an essential part of dog care and can help their fur and skin stay in tip-top condition!

Keeping a family dog can be a big expense but, as you can see from what I have mentioned above, there are a few ways you can try and keep these costs as low as possible. Hopefully, your dog won’t cost you too much!
